Many centuries ago people have evaluated this convenient
place for living. First ship-building shipyards
have appeared here even more than 2 centuries ago.
As a result of the war of 1768 - 1774, Crimea has
departed to Russia. In autumn of 1782 first Russian ships came to the
harbor - it was a beginning of the Russian Black Sea fleet. Building
of a port and a military settlement began.
By
the order of Ekaterina II from February 10, 1784 the city has received
the name Sevastopol (city, "worth of worship" in translation with Greek),
and Prince Potemkin was recommended to build a large fortress with a
naval dockyard (Admiralteystvo) for the ships in Ahtiar Harbor. To this
time 26 ships with 4 thousand sailors and officers arrived to the city.
In 1804 Russian government officially announced Sevastopol as the main
military port of the Black Sea fleet. Admiralteystvo became the main
manufacture of the city, where military ships were repaired, equipped
and drydocked, from 1808 the building of small military ships and auxiliary
vessels began.
In 1810 corvette "Crimea" was constructed, it was
equipped with 18 guns, in 1820 - legendary brig "Mercury". During the
Russian-Turkish war of 1828-1829 the crew of brig "Mercury" under the
command of lieutenant Kazarskiy took a battle with two well-equipped
Turkish ships and got the brilliant victory.
In
1834 admiral Lazarev was assigned as the general commander of the Black
Sea ports and fleet. He put large contribution to the development of
the Black Sea fleet and also in building and development of Sevastopol.
During this time ship fleet inventory was almost full updated: 160 new
battle ships, auxiliary and transport ships, including 32 steam vessels.
In October 4, 1840 the new naval drydock was established; it was located
between Southern and Ship's bays and got the name - "Lazarevskoe
Admiralteystvo".
Since that time the building of drydocks has begun,
3 docks in total were constructed. In February, 1885 Alekseevskiy dock
was finished, and by May 6, 1898 the fist ship was taken for drydocking
to the Alexandrovskiy dock. It was the armour-plated ship "Georgiy Pobedonosets".
In his report to the chief of Main Marine headquarters
from
January 30, 1850 admiral Lazarev wrote: "... This day at 7 pm we have
finished testing the Sevastopol drydocks. The 750tn- transport vessel
"Berezan" has successfully entered the dock. The airlocks' quality is
good ". In June 120-gun linear ship "Warsaw" and frigate "Brailov" entered
the docks. The docking has confirmed the high quality of the constructed
complex.
From 1794 till 1990 Sevastopol shipyards produced
more than 150 units of marine equipment: military vessels, civil ships,
floating cranes and others.
